INDIVIDUAL
  • LAST ASSIGNMENT #7!!!
  • Look for pictures that reflect how you think each character looks. These can be current or past movie stars, current or past actors and/or actresses, or pictures you draw that reflect the images of the characters.
  • Create a collage with these pictures, putting the character's name under his or her picture. You may decide what materials to use for your collage. THE COLLAGE MAY NOT BE BIGGER THAN A 12 X 18 SHEET OF PAPER. These will NOT be posted on the WIKI.
  • Be creative! Have fun with this assignment. It will be interesting to see how everyone pictures each character.
  • Due date: Wednesday, November 17.

ASSIGNMENT #6!!!

  • FINISH THE PLOT LINE - ADD TWO OR THREE EVENTS FOR THE MANUSCRIPT AND THE EPILOGUE!
  • IDENTIFY THE EVENT THAT YOU THINK IS THE CLIMAX!
  • DUE MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15.

Epilogue
  • Inspectors come and search the island and find all ten bodies and no culprit.
  • They try to link all the deaths together and find out they all were a part of a murder or murderers themselves.

Manuscript
  • Justice Wargrave is U.N. Owen.
  • He teamed up with General Macarthur to kill everyone on the island.
  • Justice Wargrave faked his own death and then killed himself when he saw the inspectors coming.

Climax
  • The climax is when is when Vera Claythorne kills herself.
  • I say that because that is the last sentence in the book and it ends the story because everyone is dead.
  • The reason why I don't say the letter is because that ties up everything so in turn that is the falling action.
The rest of the time line is well done; you've hit on the main events.
Good guess on the climax. Vera's death is expected because of the poem foreshadowing. The manuscript is the resolution because , as you said, it ties up everything so the reader can make sense of the novel. However, when Judge Wargrave is shot, the entire story shifts. Up until this time, the characters rely on the judge for his wisdom and leadership. Now that that is gone, they have no one to turn to and everyone looses trust in each another. That is the turning point (climax).

October 20, 2010

Assignment #2 Due October 22
  • Put a line above Assignment #1; assignment #2 will go above assignment #1.
  • Read chapter two.
  • Choose one of the following: suspense or foreshadowing.
  • With your small group, find four examples of suspense OR foreshadowing in chapter two.
  • Each member of your group must write on his or her WIKI page the exact wording from the book - that means type the sentences exactly as they are written.
  • Then, in a well-written paragraph, explain why these sentences clearly show either suspense or foreshadowing.
  • Read chapter three for Monday, October 25.

Four examples of suspense we found in chapter two are:

1. "Good looking fellow. Something just a little bit wrong about him...." (page 21)
2. There is something sinister about it. She shivered faintly. (page 22)
3. Queer business when you came to think of it- the whole thing was queer- very queer.... (page 26)
4. Indian Island Eh? There's a fly in the ointment. (page 35)

These sentences clearly show suspense because they sort of are like cliff-hangers. They hint that something is wrong. In number one it ends saying something is off. This clearly is suspense because it leaves you wondering, and trying to piece together what it could be talking about. It also leaves you wanting to read more. In number two, it saying the island is sinister which sort of tells you that the island gives off a menacing vibe. You can then infer that creepy or unexpected events will begin to or already have occurred on the island. In number three, it's describing the matter that is going on. Each guest is beginning to figure out that something is amiss but they can't quite figure it out yet. Number four goes right to the point that something is not right on Indian Island. All of these examples of suspense really keep you on the edge of your seat as you read this book.

Your group did a good job of choosing examples of suspense.

  • how does a mystery novel differ from a narrative?

  • how might the title be a clue to the story

Response: There are many differences in a mystery and a narrative. For example a mystery novel can be only one genre and that is mystery. On the other hand a narrative can be any kind of genre like romance or adventure. Also a narrative story is read from the narratives point of view or you are the narrative. A clue from this title is that it probably has to do with a murder. Also in the end there might be only one person left who solved the mystery and the others might have died or been booted from the island. It could also be what would happen after the mystery is solve there might be no culprits or the culprit might have died of some sort of reason or be somewhere unknown.

  • Prediction

Response: What I think might happen next is that they will all meet on Indian Island. Then a couple minutes after there arrival who ever owns the island will come up and announce that they are going to have to solve a mystery. He's also going to say that the person who gets the murderer right will recieve a big chunk of cash. He's probably going to add a catch and say that they can't leave the island until the culprit is known. Lastly he is probably going to tell them that one of the culprits is in there group.

Connor - I LOVE your predictions. This could all be a game and the visitors don't know that they are the contestants; it's almost like Survivor - great job! Don't forget that the link from this page should also link to the 'here' page with the prompts.
